SYNOPSIS
Celebration of Flight is about a very rare sort of adventurer you are unlikely to find today.
A film about a pilot who flew sheiks and kings like Haille Selassie or the king of Yemen. A film about the oldest dream of mankind and the only remaining dream of an old man: at the age of 78, Daniel Rundstroem wants to build his own plane in the middle of the tropical forest, on Dominica, an island paradise in the Caribbean.
And about a unique friendship between a 78 year old Swede and a 16 year old native boy from the Caribbean Sea. They share one desire for which they are willing to sacrifice everything: to develop and build their very own aircraft. With it, they are planning to take part in one of the world’s biggest air shows for airplane designers in Florida and win a prize. Their only goal is success. For the boy, it is the beginning of all his dreams. For the old man, it is his very last dream. And it's the legacy of a father-and-son relationship.
However for Daniel it is not only the building of an airplane. It is much more: a review of his life, the reunion with his lost son and the memories of his past adventures...
THE DIRECTOR
Lara Juliette Sanders studied Communication Science and Business Management at the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich. As a talented journalist for German newspapers, she progressed from the print press to the audiovisual world.
There she worked her way up through all levels, beginning with WDR (ARD: First German Broadcasting Station) as a radio presenter and producer and thereafter transferring to the television side hosting tv programs and finally taking on the highly responsible job of TV-producer.
Being involved with program development, she was often consulted on creative issues and became fascinated with film-directing. She started learning continuity for Odeon Film (“Ein Fall für Zwei”) and working as an assistant director on several HFF projects, such as “Talks”, directed by Mickel Rentsch.
Her first feature documentary Celebration of flight has become a very successful enterprise, currently winning awards worldwide and is being broadcasted on major European TV-Stations, such as ZDF/ARTE, RAI, YLE, NRK, DR and SVT.
Lara Juliette Sanders is now facing her next challenge to produce and direct her first feature film based on her book Up and away, soon to be published in Germany.
The real daktari, her second feature documentary, is following in the footsteps of Celebration of flight and has also been sold to ZDF/ARTE and has already been nominated at International Film Festivals for 2008.
